Nobody influences the life of a child more than a parent. But nobody influences the life of a parent more than the church. If the church wants to influence kids, they can’t forget about leveraging the influence that parents have parents.

On today’s episode of the podcast, Reggie Joiner joins us to paint a picture of the importance of engaging with parents during their child’s faith journey. Then, we’re joined by Sherry Surratt as she talks about the practical ways to partner with parents.

Ideas to Influence the Next Generation

1. Nobody influences a child more than their parents.

As ministry leaders, we may feel like we spend a lot of time with the kids in our church. However, studies show that over the course of a year, we only spend about 40 hours with a kids. Compared to parents, who get 3,000 hours, our time with kids is limited. If we want to influence the life of a child, we have to connect with and influence parents.

2. Nobody influences parents more than the church.

Parents look to the church to help them understand what’s happening in their child’s life stage. If the ultimate goal is to have children enter into a life-long walk with Christ, and nobody influences children more than parents… then the church needs to think about how they can influence the parent. This is can happen through genuine interest in getting to know parents and connecting with them when they need it most.

3. Find natural ways to connect with parents—on their schedule.

Sherry talks about the natural inflection points in a parents’ year. The start of a new school year in the fall, the holidays, the busy spring and start of summer. Find ways to connect with parents about their children during the times when they are thinking the most about the start of a new phase. Learn more at
