“We need to show kids that Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to us.” – Sue Miller
I LOVE that statement by my friend Sue Miller! Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to me. He totally rocks! He is amazing. He is my saving grace. He is love and peace and power. He is my everything. But, do kids see that in me when I am with them on Sunday morning? Do they see that in you? Do they see that in your volunteers?
Here are a few things that I love to remind volunteers when they are serving in our Kids Ministries. These ideas will help them see that Jesus really is the best thing.
- You might be the first picture of Jesus a kid ever sees.
Kids think church is where you go to learn about Jesus. What’s even better than learning about Him? Experiencing Him! And the best way for a kid to know and experience God is to know someone who knows God. One day when parent and kids think about the church, you will be what they remember.
- You may not see any major life change happen.
That doesn’t mean it is not happening. God is always at work. You may not lead a child to Christ, but you are a part of their story. Someday you will stand before God and hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant. That seed you planted was the catalyst for __________ choosing to live life for me, with me.” I sometimes wish we could see the chain reaction that happens through the years from one child’s life changed, but even though we don’t always get that opportunity, we must remember that we can play a special role.
- The kid who is the hardest to love usually needs the most love.
And whew! There are some that are HARD to love! But boy, when you break that outer shell, when you are able to peel back the layers and see what’s underneath, you will most likely find a very scared or wounded little person that is just daring someone to take the risk and love them BIG! Be that person. Take the risk. Jump in with both feet.
- You can do for a few what your Kids Pastor can’t do for many.
If you are looking to your Kids Pastor to minister to all the families in your church, you are looking in the wrong place. There is no way one staff person can know every kid, hear every prayer request, show care for every family. But, you can do that for the few kids in your group.
At Orange we believe that the two most influential entities in a child’s life are the Church and family, and at the cross roads of those two is the Small Group Leader. They are key to your ministry. Invest in them. Honor them. Teach them. And remind them to show kids that Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to them.
