Here’s an interesting statistic relating to replacing yourself as a leader:

66% of business leaders say they’re more aggressively educating employees on their role in the company. (Grant Thornton, LLP)

Why would business leaders be more aggressive these days in training, educating, and caring for their employees? We could look at the economic climate or the rate of turnover in those businesses. We could also look at the importance of continued education. But maybe it simply comes down to teaching leadership values; the more that companies educate about what it takes to be a leader in their company, the more return they’ll get from their employees.

Too often we don’t educate others about what we do because we feel like we could potentially be replaced by the person that we teach. This fear is crippling and it’s even arrogant to think that we’re the only ones that could do our job well. We should be open, strategic, and even aggressive in teaching others what we do. The strategy is to someday replace yourself with someone who doesn’t have to try to figure it all out on their own.

All of this is true when you volunteer as well. God has given each of us gifts and talents to serve each other in incredible ways. When we see others who may have the same gifts that we have, we should model how they can utilize their talents and encourage them to get involved. This will only increase the level of service toward one another. Be like the 66 percent of business leaders who are aggressively educating others in their role by doing the same in your area of ministry.
