The Trip to Orange – Step 1

Our First Look Orange Specialist team has created a series for those of you who are thinking of going Orange or who want to encourage your friends to Go Orange. Look for an installment each week of July.

The Trip to Orange – Step 1

You’re in a new position as the Preschool Director at your church. Or, you are in the start-up phase of a church plant. Or, you’ve been considering a different curriculum (or maybe this is the first curriculum!) for your preschool ministry.

In any case, YOU are the leader

  • Does it feel overwhelming?
  • Where do you start?
  • Where do you want to end up?
  • What steps do you need to take to get to the final destination?

So many questions!

Let’s treat this decision like a trip – a major trip. Not a trip to the beach for the weekend but an extended tour of Europe.

Let’s call this your “Trip to Orange.”

  • What are the dates for your trip?
  • What do you need to take with you?
  • Who is traveling with you?
  • What do you need to know before you depart on your major trip?
  • What do you want to do while you are there?
  • Who can help you navigate this trip?

Since this is a major trip, preparation begins several months in advance. You have some knowledge of Orange. You’ve read about it on the websites. You‘ve talked with some friends who went there and love it. You’re pretty much sold on the idea of traveling to Orange. But, you want more information.

What exactly is Orange? Let’s start there. Let’s start with what Orange is NOT. It’s not a box of materials you receive in the mail each month, quarterly or annually. It IS a strategy that engages churches and parents to influence the faith and character of the next generation. It IS a comprehensive curriculum that’s focused on 4 stages of life, 2 influences, and 1 end in mind.   There are many ways to get to Orange and many resources and tools that will help you get there. The journey will look differently for each traveler.

The first step is to prepare for the trip.

Several months (at least 3, 6 is better!) before you plan to arrive, gather as much information as you can. Decide the key players who will go with you and share that information with them. A basic beginner’s guide is the book Think Orange by Reggie Joiner. The Orange Leader Handbook by Reggie Joiner will help you and your travel-team define your journey to Orange. It even starts with the chapter “Getting Started” – a great place to start! For a quick and big-picture view of your final destination, watch the “Orange Strategy Video” together. More travel guides* are available to help you prepare for your trip. Choose what is most effective for you!

The next step will be to decide where you want to go and what you want to experience when you arrive in Orange.
Preschool land?
Elementary town?
Middle School valley?
High School mountain?

You decide!
