Learning to Listen

Recently Deb Springer wrote a blog post about preschoolers learning through play. I would like to take that a step further and share with you how God taught ME through play.

I LOVE word games! When I was a little girl I would always go buy a word search game before my family traveled. I would spend the entire trip with my nose in my book searching for the elusive words.

My favorite Christmas gift one year was a Deluxe Scrabble board that was on a rotating base. I LOVED that game! It is put away now and has been replaced by Words with Friends on my phone, which I LOVE to play!

Recently I found a new word game that I have been enjoying. It’s called Garden of Words. You are given 6-10 letters in a flowerpot and you have to try and fill in a type of crossword board by making words with the letters.

One particular day my flowerpot had the letters I, T, S, E, N, L. Very quickly I put together the word LISTEN. YES! Success! The next word I put together was SILENT! Another success! And then – I felt the Holy Spirit begin speaking to me.

Kathy, are you listening to Me? Can you hear me through all the noise of the world – even the good things like ministry? Are you so busy DOING that you aren’t still enough to be SILENT and LISTEN?

I stopped my game at that moment and bowed my head. Father, I want to hear from you! Forgive me for not taking time to be SILENT so that I can LISTEN to what you have to say to me.

There is a great passage in 1 Kings 19:11-13:

“The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’

“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.”

Friends – the ONLY way we can LISTEN to the whisper is if we are SILENT.

Let’s remember to stop what we are doing, planning, preparing and take time to be SILENT and LISTEN. God wants to encourage your soul and reveal truth to you. Be ready to hear it!

Now, let’s play another game!
