August 2018 Editor’s Notes

Hello, First Look Friends!

We are super excited about our new theme as we leave dry land and head for water with Anchors Away. We’re even more excited about our bottom line as we set sail to teach preschoolers that God’s way is perfect.

When you think about it, there are tons of different ways we can go in life. And, sometimes they can all sound like the right way at the same time. Our kids are going to grow up with more choices than ever. Every day, they will have to decide if they are going to go this way or that way. Is this the right way, or is that the right way?

That’s where we come in! We have the opportunity to begin teaching our children that God’s way is perfect. In fact, GOD’S way is the ONLY way that is 100% the RIGHT way every, single time! Not my way. Not your way. God’s way!

There will be times when we will not want to go God’s way. Just ask Jonah. Jonah did not want to go God’s way, so much so that he turned around and went the other way! But in the end, he learned the hard way that God’s way is perfect. We may have many options on which way to go, and we may not want to go God’s way. But, God’s way is the best way.

There are times that God’s way will be hard and leave us thinking there has got to be a better way. We will be tempted to create that better way ourselves, like Naaman. We’ve all been there, and our children will be there one day too. Naaman thought God’s way was too hard. But he gave in and did things God’s way—and well, God’s way was perfect.

There will also be times when choosing to go God’s way requires us to help others go God’s way. This may be one of the hardest things God tells us to do. It takes a lot of courage to tell others that God’s way is perfect. If young Josiah can do it, so can we. He was only a kid when he told an entire nation that God’s way is perfect!

Our children will face times when they just don’t understand God’s way. God’s way will make no sense to them, like when God told Gideon to shrink his army— BEFORE the battle! Who does that? Who sends soldiers home before the fight has even begun? Fortunately, Gideon trusted and obeyed God’s way, even though he didn’t understand it, and now we have an awesome story that shows we don’t need to understand God’s way for it to be perfect.

We can disagree with it, think it’s hard, or just simply not understand it, but God’s way will always be perfect. And, when our children begin wrestling with the big question, “Which way do I go?” they will know to go God’s way—because God’s way is prefect—every single time.

August marks the beginning of a “new year” in the world of First Look. We take this time to make adjustments to the curriculum and additions to offering. We’re so excited about the additional resources we’re including in the August curriculum! To get a full understanding of all we’ve added, please visit the First Look Blog.

Jecobi and Aija are in our clubhouse this month on the Wonder! DVD, and they’re racing some boats! The DVD is available at The Orange Store, and you can even sign up for a monthly subscription. Use this DVD to supplement a live Storyteller and/or Host for the Story section of the curriculum.

August’s Preview Video is available in the August download—it is located in the week one Prelude file. If you’d like to embed the video into your church blog, we have it available on Vimeo.Feel free to share the vision with everyone!

Our team will be praying for you to have moments filled with wonder as you give preschoolers a “first look” at the God who made them, loves them, and wants to be their friend forever.
