Sunday mornings are like game day for children’s ministry. Just like any good coach, gather your team of volunteers for a pre-game pep talk. Answer any questions about the curriculum and ask for prayer requests. Then read the following devotion to kick the morning off:
Why do we lie? Maybe we lie to avoid getting in trouble or to save face. Maybe we lie to get what we want or because in the moment it just seems easier to fudge the truth. One BIG thing we need to help kids begin to see is that all of these reasons are really lies in and of themselves. Because we don’t avoid trouble when we lie. We might get what we want in the moment but can we enjoy later on knowing it was the result of a lie? The truth is, lying is hurtful. We’ve already talked about how lying can hurt others. But it also hurts us. Because a lie is like a trap. There is no freedom in deception. Only the truth brings freedom. So let’s help our kids understand this big truth today: when you lie to help yourself, you hurt yourself instead.
